If you were a kid you would have already memorized the spelling b..e..n..c..h. If you were a little older child... you might remember it as the dreaded word quite often associated with 'standing-up'....way-up. And if you are not lucky enough to be either of the above... then you might as well have been the author of this one. Well an average religious person who is supposed to visit Mecca may not do so in his life time and an average Cricketer may not fullfill his dream of playing at Lords.However, an average Silicon Valley dreamer is always destined to 'visit' the ever adoptive bench. For him it's not the spelling but the meaning that matters: Bored of Employment Now Catch-up with Histrionics Welcome to the world of Benchers! Aha...Benchers. For those unlucky few ( assumed ) who couldn't understand the above meaning, well it's a retirement in between bursts of employment, generally a privelege rampant in USA. These are the guys who, by a wing of the mouse(a tool needed to check out how crazy you are) can create wonders on the little intelligent box ( the close cousin of the older idiot box) and also by a little more swings and jerks of a spoon can produce some ( all?) of the best tasting 'food' on this planet. So, having finished exhausting themselves with the former skill, it's time to venture full-time into the latter skill. And when they are busy putting that skill to work, they are expected to answer (over phone)queries like... NO not about how much water for 2 cups of rice or not even how much time on the oven for the coffee or the classical, how much salt...... but the most out-of-portion possible.....What's a virtual func(i know bunk...), what's an Active X (ohh... that's private), did u do awk(what walk?),how many cursors can go in a PLSQL(English pls...),do u have green card(errr... I forgot it back home) and the stunner of all, when are you available (bus...ye receiver neeche rakthe hi...) And so goes their life..... Among these benchers some or most of them are at such an intriguing phase of their life that they should be always on their toes answering the clever queries of the so-called well wishers...So, what is ur son doing in USA, suna hai ERP down hai... kahi aapka beta..., dollar ka kya daam chalra, suna hai waha saturation aa gaya...kahi aapka beta... rather they should train their family members back home to answer those queries in the most diplomatic way possible....u know afterall their lives (ijjat?) are on the ine.They can beat the world's best GK team hands down, when it comes to geography of USA.They can make Harischandra (of 'Satya' fame) turn a million times in his grave, what with all those realities they talk of.These guys actually boost the stocks of Video & Car ( Cell?) Rentals so much that the Stock Gurus start talking of a scam... And one day(night??) when one of them is deeply into his colorful dreams...comes a shake (shock?) from the real world... "Yaaar... PHONE!!" And the man on his toes shouts..."aah Hai!", even as he pushes one end of the receiver onto his ear(somebody flipped the earphone from there just in time...)Then comes... one of the best conversations one can ever hear...and probably one of the world's most biased competitions. Yeah...competition to outdo each other...if the dreamer wins it's back to the crazy-tool and if the caller wins it's time to wake-up another dreamer. The benchers march forward not by days but by minutes... some times by seconds... all the way cheering,fearing, worrying, yelling, dancing, 'spoon'ing, phoning, driving, seeing, searching, waiting, dreaming, listening, juggling, enquiring, learning, swinging, idling, sleeping, packing(?), joking, CRAZYING .....you guess what else.......
